Brain Contusion
Well, this is going to be a pretty quick post, but wanted to take a minute and let you know what happened over the holidays.
On December 21 I was in an auto accident that gave me a brain contusion. Regarding the exact cause of the accident, there were poor road conditions, but other than that it’s sketchy. Something caused me to loose control of my father-in-law’s car and hit another car head-on with the passenger’s side of the car I was driving. Those in the other car walked away ok, thanks goodness. I ended up in the intensive care for a few days while they kept in a drug induced coma and monitored my brain for swelling or other complications, and then the hospital for a few days. A total of 9 days under the care of doctors and a great group of nurses and caregivers.
Though I was verbally and physically behaving normally, it took the first half of January before I was remembering things on a daily basis, as predicted by the doctors. In fact, they said it could take up to a year before I feel completely back to my normal self. At this point, other that some difficulty I have dealing with visual extremes (brights, darks, lots of motion or movement), I’m feeling quite good and extremely thankful for my life, my wife and kids, my mom & dad, and my entire family, my team and my bosses Andrew and Tim who were and are all incredibly supportive.
I’ll probably post more about this in the future, but that’s it for now. Hope everyone had a great holiday season.

Thomas Hawk’s Will and Holly on the Home Page of myfamily
A couple weeks ago we were looking to swap out one of the two rotating images on the home page of our service over at myfamily.com. I’ve been following Thomas Hawk’s photography for a while. He’s a fantastic photographer and while browsing through his photos I had remembered seeing one of his shots of two really cute kids (turns out they’re his kids) looking into the LCD on the back of a digital SLR (a nice one… Canon 5d). I paged through his flickr stream and found it again… so we asked him if we could use it for our service, and he agreed. That picture really captures a great moment between brother and sister. And, as many of you know, I’m a bit of a photo nut myself. I often find my son doing the exact same thing with my Nikon, so Thomas’ photo really connects with me too.
Anyway, a big thank you to Tom for allowing us to use one of his gems. And thanks to his kids as well.

Golden Pacific Bank to open in January
With all the turmoil in the economy these days, it hardly seems the right time to be starting up a new bank, but that’s exactly the right time according to my brother… and the other founders of the newly formed Golden Pacific Bank. Look at it this way, “we have a clean balance sheet from which to start”, Roy tells me. Ok, makes good sense. And what do I know about banking anyway? The same could be said for launching a startup, I guess, but tell that to the VCs these days. Congrats Roy on the new venture. I look forward to visiting your first branch when it opens.
